Joséphine Verhaeghe completed her D.V.M. in 2005 at ENVT (Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire de Toulouse, France). After 2 years of vet practice in the North of France, she now works with the training and technical support team at CID LINES, an Ecolab company. Based in Belgium, she has actively promoted hygiene and biosecurity principles in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America. She is already working for 15 years as a hygiene and mastitis prevention consultant. She has had the opportunity to visit many dairy farms across the world, and to design milking routine and cow management protocols to promote mastitis management and milk quality worldwide.

Matthias Wieland grew up on a dairy farm in rural Germany. After an agricultural apprenticeship, he earned his veterinary degree from the School of Veterinary Medicine, in Munich, Germany. After graduation in 2007, Matthias conducted his doctoral thesis work on umbilical disease in calves at the Clinic for Ruminants at the School of Veterinary Medicine in Munich. After completion of his thesis, he continued to work as a clinical instructor at the Clinic for Ruminants until 2013. He completed a residency program within the European College of Bovine Health Management of which he became a Diplomate in 2014. The last year of the residency training was completed at the Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic at Cornell University. In 2015, Matthias joined Dr. Daryl Nydam’s lab under whose supervision he pursued the Clinical Fellowship program at the Cornell University. He joined the Quality Milk Production Services Program as an Extension Associate and started to work on his PhD in the Employee Degree Program. His work focused on the optimization of the milk harvesting process with special consideration of milking routine, machine settings, and diagnostic techniques. The goal of machine milking is to harvest high-quality milk from cows as quickly, gently, and completely as possible. To achieve our goal, we need optimal milking machine equipment and settings, as well as optimal milking routine. Thus, understanding the interaction between the cow, the milking machine, and the milking personnel is a prerequisite for successful management of the milking center. In this presentation, we will discuss the importance of pre-milking udder preparation and milking machine settings on milking performance, udder health, and animal well-being. A diagnostic approach to evaluate the current condition in a milking center and evidence-based management practices will be presented.
